Uranium: The Element Named After a Planet - History & Discovery
Uranium was named after the planet Uranus.
The planet Uranus was discovered in 1781, and the element uranium was discovered in 1789. The discoverer of uranium, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, chose the name to honor the newly discovered planet.
