  • Understanding the C=C Double Bond in Ethene: Orbital Overlap
The C=C double bond in ethene is formed by the overlap of two atomic orbitals:

    * One sp2 hybrid orbital from each carbon atom

This overlap forms a sigma bond which is a strong, single covalent bond between the two carbon atoms.

In addition to the sigma bond, the C=C double bond also includes a pi bond. The pi bond is formed by the sideways overlap of the unhybridized p orbital from each carbon atom.
