  • Understanding the Scleral Endothelium: Structure and Function
    The internal surface of the sclera is mostly lined by a thin layer of endothelium.

    This endothelium is a single layer of flattened cells that is continuous with the endothelium lining the inside of the cornea. It plays a role in maintaining the proper fluid balance within the eye and helps to prevent leakage from the blood vessels in the choroid into the vitreous humor.
