  • What is an Alkane? Properties and Classification
A compound containing only carbon and hydrogen with no double bonds between atoms is classified as an alkane.

    Here's why:

    * Alkanes are hydrocarbons (compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen) with all single bonds between the carbon atoms. This results in a saturated structure, meaning there's no possibility for double or triple bonds.

    * Alkenes contain at least one double bond between carbon atoms.

    * Alkynes contain at least one triple bond between carbon atoms.
