  • Alkaline Earth Metals: Properties, Examples & Reactivity
    The elements in group two of the periodic table are called the alkaline earth metals. They are:

    * Beryllium (Be)

    * Magnesium (Mg)

    * Calcium (Ca)

    * Strontium (Sr)

    * Barium (Ba)

    * Radium (Ra)

    These elements share several common characteristics, including:

    * High reactivity: They are all reactive metals, although less reactive than the alkali metals (group 1).

    * Two valence electrons: They have two electrons in their outermost shell, which makes them readily form ionic bonds by losing these electrons.

    * Form alkaline oxides: When reacting with oxygen, they form oxides which are alkaline (basic) when dissolved in water.

    * Soft and silvery: They are soft metals, with a silvery white appearance.

    * Good conductors of heat and electricity: They are good conductors of heat and electricity.

    Let me know if you'd like to learn more about any specific alkaline earth metal!
