  • Why Does Salt Affect Boiling Point? Understanding the Science
    Salt doesn't actually help water boil faster. It actually raises the boiling point of water. Here's why:

    * Boiling point elevation: When you add salt to water, the salt dissolves and forms ions (charged particles) in the solution. These ions interfere with the water molecules' ability to escape into the vapor phase. This means the water needs to reach a higher temperature to overcome the increased attraction between the water molecules and the salt ions.

    * Colligative property: This phenomenon is called boiling point elevation, and it's a colligative property, meaning it depends on the number of solute particles (in this case, salt ions) in the solution, not the type of solute.

    So, while salt doesn't make water boil faster, it does make the water take longer to reach a boil. This is because the water needs to reach a higher temperature to overcome the presence of the salt ions and start boiling.
