  • Understanding Water as a Chemical Compound: H₂O Explained
Water is called a compound because it is made up of two or more different elements chemically bonded together.

    Here's why:

    * Elements: Water is composed of two elements: hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

    * Chemical Bond: These elements are not simply mixed together; they are chemically bonded in a specific ratio. In water, there are two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom (H₂O).

    * New Substance: The chemical bonding creates a new substance with properties different from the original elements. Water is a liquid at room temperature, while hydrogen and oxygen are gases. Water also has unique properties like being a good solvent and having a high heat capacity.

In contrast, a mixture is simply a combination of substances that are not chemically bonded. For example, salt and pepper mixed together is a mixture, not a compound. Each substance retains its original properties.
