  • Understanding the Atom's Nucleus: Protons, Neutrons & Atomic Number
The center of an atom is called the nucleus. The nucleus contains:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles that determine the element of the atom. The number of protons in an atom is called its atomic number.

    * Neutrons: Neutrally charged particles that contribute to the atom's mass.

The nucleus is incredibly dense and accounts for almost all of the atom's mass. The electrons, which are negatively charged, orbit the nucleus in a cloud-like region called the electron cloud.
