  • Understanding Basic Solutions: Concentration & pH
    A basic solution is indicated by a high concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) and a low concentration of hydrogen ions (H+).

    Here are some ways to quantify this:

    * pH: A basic solution has a pH greater than 7. The higher the pH, the more basic the solution.

    * pOH: A basic solution has a pOH less than 7. The lower the pOH, the more basic the solution.

    * [OH-]: A basic solution has a hydroxide ion concentration greater than 1 x 10^-7 M.

    * [H+]: A basic solution has a hydrogen ion concentration less than 1 x 10^-7 M.

    Remember that pH and pOH are related by the equation: pH + pOH = 14.
