  • Sand: Is It a Compound, Element, or Mixture? (Heterogeneous)
    Sand is a heterogeneous mixture. Here's why:

    * Element: An element is a pure substance made up of only one type of atom (like gold or oxygen). Sand is not made of a single element.

    * Compound: A compound is formed when two or more elements chemically combine in a fixed ratio (like water, H₂O). Sand is not a chemically combined substance.

    * Homogeneous mixture: A homogeneous mixture has a uniform composition throughout (like saltwater). Sand has visible, different components.

    * Heterogeneous mixture: A heterogeneous mixture has a non-uniform composition. Sand is made up of different materials like:

    * Quartz: The most common component

    * Feldspar: Another common mineral

    * Micas: Shiny, flaky minerals

    * Other minerals: Depending on the source, sand can contain small bits of rock, shells, or other debris.

    You can see the different parts of sand if you look closely, making it a heterogeneous mixture.
