The formation of basic elements, like hydrogen and helium, occurred during the Big Bang, which is estimated to have happened approximately 13.8 billion years ago.

While trace amounts of heavier elements like lithium were also formed during the Big Bang, most of the heavier elements we see today were formed much later, in the cores of stars through nuclear fusion.
