  • Understanding Non-Ferrous Metals: Definitions & Common Terms
There isn't a single, universally accepted term for any metal other than iron and alloys. Here's why:

    * "Non-ferrous" is the most common term used, but it also includes alloys that don't contain iron as a primary component.

    * "Base metal" is sometimes used, but it's often associated with less valuable metals like copper, zinc, lead, etc.

    * "Precious metal" is reserved for metals like gold, silver, platinum, etc. which have high economic value and are often used for jewelry and investments.

Instead of a single term, you can use more specific descriptions depending on the context:

    * "Lightweight metals" for aluminum, magnesium, titanium, etc.

    * "Heavy metals" for lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.

    * "Transition metals" for elements in groups 3-12 of the periodic table (like copper, nickel, zinc, etc.)

The best way to describe a metal other than iron and alloys depends on the specific properties or applications you are interested in.
