  • Surfactant in Alveoli: Function & Importance
The fluid in alveoli is called surfactant.

    Here's why it's important:

    * Reduces surface tension: Surfactant is a mixture of lipids and proteins that lines the alveoli. It helps to reduce the surface tension of the fluid lining the alveoli, preventing them from collapsing during exhalation.

    * Keeps alveoli open: Without surfactant, the alveoli would collapse and make it difficult to breathe. This is especially important for newborns, whose lungs are not yet fully developed.

    * Facilitates gas exchange: Surfactant also helps to create a thin, even layer of fluid, which optimizes the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and the blood.
