  • Iron: Natural Occurrence and Common Compounds - A Comprehensive Guide
Iron occurs naturally in both forms:

    * Pure, native iron: While rare, it can be found in meteorites, which are remnants of asteroids or planetary cores. These meteorites are a source of nearly pure iron.

    * Iron compounds: This is the far more common form. Iron is found in a variety of minerals like:

    * Iron oxides: Hematite (Fe₂O₃) and Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) are common examples.

    * Iron sulfides: Pyrite (FeS₂) is a well-known mineral known as "fool's gold" due to its golden color.

    * Iron carbonates: Siderite (FeCO₃) is another example.

So, while you might find a small amount of pure iron in meteorites, the vast majority of iron on Earth is found combined with other elements in various compounds.
