  • Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM): Definition & Impact
The bits of ash and dust put into the air by certain kinds of diesel engines are called particulate matter (PM).

Specifically, this type of PM is often referred to as diesel particulate matter (DPM).

It's important to note that not all diesel engines produce significant amounts of particulate matter. Modern diesel engines with advanced emissions control systems, such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs), significantly reduce the amount of PM released into the air.
