  • P5 Steel: Composition, Properties & Applications - Carpenter Technology
    P5 is a high-carbon high-chromium tool steel produced by Carpenter Technology Corporation. P5 steel grade is similar to AISI’s D5 steel grade. P5 steel is a low-alloy steel that was designed to be easy to machine.

    P5 steel is classified as a general-purpose, through hardening tool steel. It has good resistance to wear and a high level of toughness, making it a popular choice for cutting tools, including drills, taps and reamers.

    The chemical composition of P5 steel is:

    * Carbon: 1.50%

    * Chromium: 12.00%

    * Vanadium: 0.80%

    * Molybdenum: 1.00%

    * Silicon: 0.30%

    * Manganese: 0.40%

    * Sulphur: 0.030% max.

    * Phosphorus: 0.030% max.

    The combination of these elements gives P5 steel its distinctive properties, such as its high wear resistance and toughness.
