  • Sodium-Nitrogen Bond: Understanding Ionic Bonding
The bond that would form between sodium and nitrogen is an ionic bond. In an ionic bond, one atom donates one or more of its electrons to another atom, leading to the formation of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). In the case of sodium and nitrogen, sodium would donate its valence electron to nitrogen. Sodium would become a positively charged sodium ion (Na+), while nitrogen would become a negatively charged nitride ion (N3-). The electrostatic attraction between the positively and negatively charged ions would hold the sodium and nitrogen atoms together in an ionic bond.
