Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the two primary pollutants that contribute to the formation of acid rain. These pollutants are emitted into the atmosphere from power plants, factories, and vehicles. Once in the atmosphere, they react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid. These acids then fall to the ground in rain, snow, or fog, creating acid rain.
