  • Atomic Number: Protons and Element Identification
In a neutral atom, the atomic number is equivalent to the number of protons in the nucleus. The atomic number uniquely identifies an element, as each element has a different number of protons. For example, hydrogen has an atomic number of 1, carbon has an atomic number of 6, and oxygen has an atomic number of 8.
