    Nitrogen and oxygen make up approximately 99% of the Earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen accounts for about 78% and oxygen accounts for about 21%, with the remaining 1% consisting of trace gases such as argon, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, xenon, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, iodine, and ammonia.
