  • Molecular Motion: Understanding Speed in Gas, Liquid, and Solid States
The molecules will move faster in the gas state.

In a gas, the molecules are far apart from each other and have a lot of energy. This allows them to move quickly and freely. In a liquid, the molecules are closer together and have less energy. This makes them move more slowly. In a solid, the molecules are very close together and have very little energy. This makes them move very slowly.
