  • Nuclear Reactor Moderators: Understanding Heavy Water & Graphite
Heavy water (deuterium oxide, \(D_2 O\)) and graphite are the two substances used as moderators in nuclear reactors. These materials can slow down (moderate) the speed of fast neutrons produced by nuclear fission to make them more likely to cause other fissions and sustain a chain reaction.
