    Thomas Edison tried numerous materials for the filament in his light bulb, including platinum, iridium, and even human hair. In his successful 1879 electric light bulb, he used a carbonized cotton thread filament. Later, Edison experimented with filaments made of bamboo, which lasted longer and provided brighter light.
