  • Physical Change vs. Chemical Change: Why Boiling Water is Physical
Boiling water is not an example of a chemical change. It is an example of a physical change.

When water boils, the water molecules gain energy and move faster. This causes the water to change from a liquid to a gas. The chemical composition of the water does not change. The water molecules are still H2O molecules.

A chemical change occurs when the chemical composition of a substance changes. For example, when iron rusts, the iron reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide. The chemical composition of the iron has changed from Fe to Fe2O3.
