  • Voltaic Effect: Understanding EMF Between Metals - Definition & Explanation
The phenomenon of emf development between two different metals placed in contact is known as the Voltaic effect or contact potential.

When two different metals are brought into contact, electrons flow from one metal to the other until an equilibrium is reached. This results in a build-up of negative charge on one metal and positive charge on the other, creating a potential difference or emf between the two metals. The magnitude of this emf depends on the materials involved and is typically in the range of a few microvolts to a few volts.
