By focusing on the functional contributions of various social institutions and practices, structural functionalism may overlook the ways in which these structures can also perpetuate inequality, oppression, and social injustice. It can fail to account for the experiences and perspectives of marginalized groups and individuals who may not benefit from or be well-served by the existing social order.
Additionally, the approach can be criticized for being too deterministic, implying that social structures and institutions have a fixed and unchanging purpose. This can overlook the dynamic and evolving nature of social systems, as well as the agency and creativity of individuals and groups in shaping their own social realities.
