  • Critiques of Structural Functionalism: Limitations and Weaknesses
One accurate criticism of the structural functional approach is that it tends to overemphasize the harmony and stability of society and downplay the role of conflict and change. The approach assumes that society is a well-integrated system where each part contributes to the overall functioning of the whole. This can lead to a neglect of the ways in which different groups and interests within society may conflict with each other and the potential for social change and transformation.

By focusing on the functional contributions of various social institutions and practices, structural functionalism may overlook the ways in which these structures can also perpetuate inequality, oppression, and social injustice. It can fail to account for the experiences and perspectives of marginalized groups and individuals who may not benefit from or be well-served by the existing social order.

Additionally, the approach can be criticized for being too deterministic, implying that social structures and institutions have a fixed and unchanging purpose. This can overlook the dynamic and evolving nature of social systems, as well as the agency and creativity of individuals and groups in shaping their own social realities.
