  • Compounds vs. Elements: Understanding Chemical Substances
An element cannot represent a compound. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. A compound, on the other hand, is a substance that is composed of two or more elements chemically bonded together. For example, water is a compound that is composed of the elements hydrogen and oxygen.
