In the year 1800, scientists had not yet discovered how to extract aluminum from alumina. The first successful extraction of aluminum was performed by the Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Ørsted in 1825, who used a potassium-mercury amalgam to reduce anhydrous aluminum chloride.
