Acids vs. Bases: Understanding Hydrogen Ions (H+) and Hydroxide Ions (OH-)
An acid contains more hydrogen ions (H+) than hydroxide ions (OH-). A base, on the other hand, contains more hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions. When an acid is dissolved in water, it releases H+ ions, increasing the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, whereas a base releases OH- ions, increasing the hydroxide ion concentration.
