Open-pit mining is the most common method of mining lime. This involves removing the overburden, or soil and rock that lies above the lime deposit, to expose the deposit. The lime deposit is then drilled and blasted to break it into smaller pieces. These pieces are then loaded into trucks and transported to a processing plant.
Underground mining
Underground mining is used when the lime deposit is located deep underground. This involves sinking a shaft or tunnel to access the deposit. The lime deposit is then mined using the same methods as open-pit mining.
Processing
Once the lime deposit has been mined, it is processed to remove impurities and to produce a consistent product. The processing steps typically include:
* Crushing: The lime deposit is crushed into smaller pieces.
* Screening: The crushed lime deposit is screened to remove any oversized pieces.
* Washing: The lime deposit is washed to remove any dirt or other contaminants.
* Drying: The lime deposit is dried to remove any excess water.
* Calcining: The lime deposit is heated to a high temperature to convert it into quicklime.
* Hydration: The quicklime is hydrated by adding water to produce hydrated lime.
The processed lime is then packaged and shipped to customers.
