  • Baking Soda & Vinegar Reaction: Physical or Chemical Change? - Chemistry Explained
The reaction between baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) is a chemical change.

When these two substances are mixed, they undergo a chemical reaction that results in the formation of new substances. The products of this reaction are carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate. The chemical equation for this reaction is:

    NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → CO2 + H2O + CH3COONa

During this chemical reaction, the chemical bonds of the starting materials (baking soda and vinegar) are broken and new chemical bonds are formed to create the products (carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate). As a result, the chemical composition of the system changes, indicating that a chemical change has taken place.
