  • Chloride: Essential Electrolyte & Risks of Excess Intake
Chloride is not generally bad for you. In fact, it is an essential electrolyte that your body needs to function properly. Chloride helps regulate the balance of fluids in your body and helps transport nutrients into and out of cells. It also plays a role in muscle contractions and nerve impulses.

However, consuming too much chloride can lead to a condition called hyperchloremia, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, and confusion. Hyperchloremia is rare and is usually only seen in people with certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease or dehydration.

The recommended daily intake of chloride for adults is 3,400 milligrams. This amount can be easily obtained through a healthy diet that includes foods such as table salt, processed foods, and dairy products.
