  • Sodium Atoms for Oxygen's Octet: Electron Transfer Explained
Two sodium atoms are needed to provide electrons necessary to complete the valence octet of an oxygen atom.

This is because oxygen has six valence electrons, and needs two more electrons to fill its outermost energy level. Sodium has one valence electron, so two sodium atoms can provide the two electrons that oxygen needs.
