  • Understanding Acidity Detection in Hazardous Materials Response: The Role of Litmus Paper
The fire service does not use pH to measure the strength of an acid. Instead, they may measure the acidity of a substance during hazmat incidents by using litmus paper. Litmus paper is a type of indicator that changes color in the presence of acids or bases. Depending on the color change of the litmus paper when it is dipped in the substance, it can be an indication that it is acidic (Red colored change) or basic (Blue colored change).
