  • Understanding Solution Classifications by Phase (Solid & Liquid)
Solutions can be classified into three categories based on their phases:

    1) Solid Solutions: These solutions consist of a solid solute dissolved in a solid solvent. The resulting mixture is also in the solid phase. An example of a solid solution is an alloy, which is a mixture of two or more metals.

    2) Liquid Solutions: In liquid solutions, the solute is dissolved in a liquid solvent, forming a homogeneous mixture. Both the solute and solvent are in the liquid phase. A common example of a liquid solution is saltwater, where salt (solute) is dissolved in water (solvent).

    3) Gas Solutions: Gas solutions are mixtures of gases where one gas (the solute) is dissolved in another gas (the solvent). Both the solute and solvent are in the gaseous state. An example of a gas solution is air, which is a mixture of nitrogen (solvent) and other gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor (solutes).
