  • Acid-Base Reactions: Understanding Salt and Water Formation
When an acid reacts with a metal hydroxide, a salt and water are formed. The general reaction is:

    $$\text{acid} + \text{metal hydroxide} \rightarrow \text{salt} + \text{water}$$

For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (H$_2$O) are formed:

    $$\text{HCl} + \text{NaOH} \rightarrow \text{NaCl} + \text{H}_2\text{O}$$
