  • Ionic vs. Covalent Bonds: Which Atoms Form Which?
Ionic bonds form between a metal and a nonmetal. The metal loses one or more electrons, which are then gained by the nonmetal. The resulting ions are attracted to each other by their opposite charges.

Covalent bonds form between two nonmetals. The atoms share electrons in order to fill their outer electron shells. The shared electrons are held in a region of space between the two nuclei, and they belong to both atoms at the same time.
