Zinc and bronze pennies can usually be distinguished easily by their colors. Zinc pennies have a dull copper-brown color and are often very similar in color to wheat pennies, while bronze pennies are a bright bronze color. The zinc used to make zinc pennies also produces a different appearance when worn, with the center developing a lighter appearance than the edges while bronze pennies maintain a uniform shine.
