  • Understanding Nuclear Charge and Atomic Number Trends
The nuclear charge, also known as atomic number, does not increase when moving across a period in the periodic table. Instead, it increases steadily as we move down a group from top to bottom. This is because the atomic number represents the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, and as we move down a group, an additional electron shell is added, meaning there is one more proton in the nucleus to balance the negative charge of the electrons.
