  • Sodium Chloride: The Elements and Formation of Table Salt
    The compound sodium chloride is produced by the combination of the elements sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl). Sodium is a soft, silvery-white metal that is highly reactive and forms a variety of compounds, while chlorine is a pale green, diatomic gas that is also highly reactive. When these two elements come into contact, they undergo a chemical reaction to form sodium chloride, a white, crystalline solid that is commonly known as table salt. The reaction between sodium and chlorine can be represented by the following chemical equation:

    2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl

    In this reaction, two atoms of sodium react with one molecule of chlorine to produce two molecules of sodium chloride.
