  • Gold Testing: Hydrochloric Acid vs. Sulfuric Acid - Which is Best?
For a gold test, you only need hydrochloric acid (HCl).

Hydrochloric acid is commonly used to test for the presence of gold. When hydrochloric acid comes into contact with gold, it reacts with the metal to form a gold chloride solution, which is typically yellow in color. The presence of a yellow color indicates the existence of gold.

On the other hand, sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is not typically used for gold testing because it does not react with gold in the same way as hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric acid is commonly used to test for other metals or substances.
