  • Ionic Bonding: Cations, Anions, and the Formation of Ionic Compounds
Ionic bonding occurs when electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of positively and negatively charged ions. These ions are then attracted to each other by their opposite charges, forming an ionic bond.

The particles produced by ionic bonding are:

    1. Cations: These are positively charged ions that have lost electrons. Cations are formed when atoms lose one or more valence electrons. For example, sodium loses its one valence electron to become a Na+ cation.

    2. Anions: These are negatively charged ions that have gained electrons. Anions are formed when atoms gain one or more valence electrons. For example, oxygen gains two valence electrons to become an O2- anion.
