The idea of electrons orbiting around the nucleus like planets around the sun was proposed by Ernest Rutherford in his Rutherford model of the atom. Developed in the early 1900s, this model described the atom as having a small, dense nucleus surrounded by electrons. While the Rutherford model was a foundational step in understanding atomic structure, it was eventually superseded by more accurate quantum mechanical models.
