  • Understanding Atomic Number: Determining the Number of Protons
To get the number of protons in an atom, you can look at the atomic number of the element. The atomic number is a unique identifier for each element, and it corresponds to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element.

For example, the atomic number of hydrogen is 1, which means that a hydrogen atom has 1 proton. The atomic number of carbon is 6, so a carbon atom has 6 protons. And the atomic number of oxygen is 8, so an oxygen atom has 8 protons.

You can find the atomic number of an element on the periodic table. The atomic number is located at the top of each element's square.
