    Aluminum only forms one stable trivalent cation, Al3+, so the prefix “mono” is not needed. Boron, on the other hand, can form both a + 3 and +1 cation, so the prefix “tri” is used to designate that the compound contains the + 3 ion, not the +1 ion.
