  • Covalent Bonds in CH4: Understanding the Bonding in Methane
    Covalent Bond

In a covalent bond, atoms share electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration. In the case of CH4, the carbon atom shares its four valence electrons with the four hydrogen atoms, each of which contributes one valence electron. This results in a tetrahedral arrangement of the four hydrogen atoms around the carbon atom, with each hydrogen atom bonded to the carbon atom by a single covalent bond.
