  • The Origin of the Name 'Sulfur': A Linguistic Journey
The word "sulfur" ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European h₂éwosres ("the burner").

Its earliest attestation in English language history comes from circa 1300, where it appears as `sulphre`, borrowed from Old French soufre, in turn borrowed from Latin word of the same orthography and similar sense sulphur, in origin Greek theion θeῖον, cognate with Sanskrit śulvarī शुल्वरी.
