  • Hydrogen and Oxygen: Compound or Elements? Understanding Water (H2O)
Hydrogen and oxygen together form a compound, specifically water (H2O). Water is a molecule composed of two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to one oxygen atom. It is a compound because it is a substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions by mass. In the case of water, the ratio of hydrogen to oxygen is always 2:1.
