  • Ionic Bond Naming: How Nonmetals Become Ide
The name of a non-metal in an ionic bond changes to end in -ide.

For example, when chlorine gas (Cl2) reacts with sodium metal (Na) to form sodium chloride (NaCl), the chlorine atom loses one electron and becomes a negatively charged chloride ion (Cl-). The positive sodium ion (Na+) and the negative chloride ion are attracted to each other and form an ionic bond.
