  • Phosphorus Bonds: Understanding Covalent Bonding
Phosphorus atoms can form covalent bonds with each other. A covalent bond is a type of chemical bond in which two atoms share electrons to form a stable electron configuration. In the case of phosphorus, each phosphorus atom has five valence electrons. When two phosphorus atoms bond with each other, they share three electrons each, forming a covalent bond. This results in a molecule of phosphorus trichloride, PCl3.
